Five Easy Steps to Buying
the Perfect Carpet for Your Home
1.
Choose the right carpet fiber.
To find the carpet that fits your home, it's best
to think about the way you live and the overall "feel" you
want your décor to have. Consider the room
you want to carpet and how your family uses that
room . then find the carpet fiber that is best for
you! Below is a summary of the types of carpet you
can choose from:
- Nylon is the most durable
carpet fiber available. It is the carpet of choice
for homes with pets and children as well as for
those who entertain a lot. Nylon is ideal for heavy
traffic in hallways and stairs.
- Polyester is known for its
luxurious look, feel, and wonderful selection of
colors and styles. This carpet fiber is a good
value for homes with a normal amount of traffic,
although it is less durable and stain-resistant
than nylon.
- Olefin offers good stain and
moisture resistance, but scores below nylon and
polyester for wear ability. It can be a good choice
of carpet fiber in loop-pile construction, although
its colors and styles are limited.
- Wool is favored for its extraordinary
natural beauty. It has natural soil resistance
qualities, but is not stain-resistant. Wool carpet
fiber is well-made and retains its good looks for
a long time, but it can be quite costly.
2. Be sure to select a carpet that has quality
construction.
Simply put, how long a carpet stays beautiful depends
on how well it is made. The twist and density of
a carpet's fibers affect its durability, appearance
and price.
- Twisting gives fiber strands
the strength to stand up to heavy foot traffic
and cleaning. Thick fiber with a tight twist is
a sign of high-quality carpet.
- Density is how tightly the
twisted fibers are packed together. The denser
the carpet, the better the durability.
3. Determine the carpet's ability to resist
stains.
A grungy, soiled carpet will very quickly lose its
appeal. Before you buy your carpet, it's important
to find out how well it will stand up to stains and
spills. If you have kids, pets, high-traffic areas,
or entertain a lot, it makes sense to choose a carpet
with superior stain resistance. The good news is
that this won't limit your choice of carpet styles
and colors!
4. Select the right style and color carpeting
for your home.
Think of your carpet as the "fifth wall" that connects
all other design elements in the room. It's important
to consider the walls, window treatments, and other
furnishings when choosing a color for your carpet.
The staff at RS Flooring America is always
happy to help you make the perfect selection . just
bring fabric and color samples with you when you
visit our showroom.
5. Calculate the cost of your carpeting.
When determining the cost of your carpet, remember
to include the following:
- Amount needed: More and more
carpet manufacturers and retailers are starting
to sell carpet by the square foot rather than the
square yard. This makes it easier to calculate
how much carpet you need. Just multiply the number
of feet in the length of the room by the number
of feet in the width. Add 10-15 square feet if
there will be seams and waste.
- Carpet pad: A dense, resilient
pad keeps your carpet looking newer longer.
