Today's wood flooring is extremely versatile. Solid,
one-piece boards are a good choice for ground level
and above-grade applications.
Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed from
several layers that are bonded together under extreme
pressure. This prevents warping and buckling in cool,
moisture-prone areas. This technological advancement
means engineered floors can be used anywhere - even
to cover a below-grade basement floor.
 2. Pick a hardwood floor that is right for
your lifestyle.
Hardwood flooring is a beautiful, high-performance,
and long-wearing product by nature. Where you intend
to install your wood flooring and the amount of foot
traffic you expect - along with appearance - usually
determines your selection.
Wood flooring is available in several styles:
- Strip flooring: The flooring
comes in strips with widths that range from 1 1/2" through
2 1/2" and thicknesses of 5/16" through
3/4". When strip flooring is laid down, it
can create an illusion that a room is larger than
it is.
- Plank flooring: Plank flooring
also comes in strips, but they are wider, usually
from 3" through 7". Plank flooring can
be used to create a more traditional or country
look.
- Parquet flooring: Parquet flooring
is a series of wood pieces that create a geometric
design. Parquet offers a variety of design options.

Decide on the look you want for your home.
The most common choices for wood flooring are: beech,
cherry, hickory, maple, oak, pecan, red oak, walnut,
or exotic imports. Each has its own distinctive characteristics
such as grain and color tone. The natural variations
in the wood you choose will factor heavily in its
overall look.
The wood's level of shine is also significant. How
shiny the wood appears varies according to its finish,
which may be classified as matte (dull shine), satin
(medium shine), or gloss (high shine).
4. Choose the style of your plank edges.
Surprisingly, the design of the edges of your hardwood
strips greatly contributes to the look of the installed
floor. Many strips (or planks - the wider version)
offer you the choice of square edge (smooth and flat
surface), micro bevel (mild bevel that can be felt
with the fingertips), or full bevel (forming a strong
groove to visually separate the strips and focus
your eye on grain line).
